The transition dates, to and from daylight saving time, in Iran are based on the Persian calendar and thus one must convert the Persian calendar dates to the Gregorian calendar dates. The Persian calendar is a solar calendar that is far more scientific and accurate than the Gregorian calendar as it is based on an accurate movement of the stars. The Persian calendar also uses 12 months which, in order from first to twelfth, are:
Daylight saving time in Iran begins on the first day of Farvardin. The first day of Farvardin corresponds to March 21 in the Gregorian calendar. However, every four years, the first day of Farvardin corresponds to March 20. If the Gregorian year is a Leap Year, then that year is on March 20. Daylight saving time in Iran ends on the thirstiest day of Shahrivar. The thirstiest day of Shahrivar corresponds to September 21 in the Gregorian calendar. As above, every four years and on a Leap Year, the thirstiest day of Shahrivar corresponds to September 20. The current Persian calendar has been used in Iran since 1925 and in Afghanistan since 1957. It should also be noted that Iran’s time zone is is not set on the hour. During standard time, Iran is UTC/GMT +3½ hours (IRST). During daylight saving time, Iran is UTC/GMT +4½ hours (IRDT).
